My Greatest Role - & it just works!

Walk with confidence.
Dress with style.
Speak with panache.
Even if you don't feel those things on the inside, adopt the persona of one who does.
Think of this as your greatest role, and it'll fit like a second skin.

An Utterly Impartial History of Britain Review

I had given this book to my mother for Christmas last year and she loved it so much that she decided that I should read it.
Well I might not always agree with my mother but this time it is an exception. It is really a great book to read.
Well it would seem quite daunting to read 2000 years of British History but John O'Farrell does it brilliantly. 552 pages and I never for a moment felt those school time episodes when you would like to disappear rather to stick out another single word from that teacher.
History is told in a comical exhilarating way. Full of facts without every being boring or overwhelming. On the contrary it made me search on internet for more facts.
I was fascinated by his now and again explanations of certain expressions or words that we use today but have come a long way through history.
I would recommended it as a school text book because it will finally take away the dullness that most of us had to endure while studying history and instill in those who read it the eagerness to know more (which is what teaching should actually be about especially history).
One episode really made me laugh and think. At the end of the book O'Farrell describes the British way of disagreeing with something. So you would like to start with writing to a local newspaper, then a petition and if you really feel strongly about it “there's always the poster in the front window”.
Well you see when I have something to say to my fellow condominium Italian neighbours I always stick an A4 paper on my front door (in the absence of front windows), deeming it as the most civilised way of communicating without pinpointing or accusing anyone.
Probably here Mr. John O'Farrell would have something funny to say as how we ex-British colonies have acquired the bizarre customs of the British Empire and eventually export it to wherever we go obliviously of how silly or alien those methods can seem to others.

Teaching the Universe / Insegnare L'Universo

Sometimes down-to-earth philosophy crops up in the least unexpected moments in life. This time it happened with my sister while chatting on skype. We were talking about an new acquaintance of mine. A person that not only gets lost in the clouds but also drifts away in her thoughts while speaking to other persons.
These are my sister’s comments:

“poor thing...another lost soul who thinks she can teach the universe how to spin, rotate and expand… my philosophy for life is...whatever moved gracefully before you were born...will do the same after...don’t interfere...you'll cause only harm...”

Who governs the world? / Chi governa il mondo?

Early this morning I wanted to hang out my washing on the balcony. This time instead of a small defenceless bird which I had found on Friday, I now find a belligerent locust, that was already quite nervous due to my cat’s vexations.

Well I start thinking on how to work out a way to keep myself and the locust safe.
In that precise moment the door bell rings. Jehovah witnesses.

“Dear madam we would like to ask you a question”
“Yes?”
“Who is governing the world is this precise moment?”
Really? Well I was going to answer:
A locust in my balcony…because I would like to hang out my washing but can’t!

I do not know how many of you are familiar with the TV series Detective Monk. I’ve been told many a times that sometimes I do resemble him…and yes these last few days were what I can definitely define as Monk days.
I was going around the house putting things in order, by colour, by alphabet or whatever it happened to be. Dusting the remotest part of the house, cleaning the computer keyboard, the window sills and the interlocking parts of the mosquito nets, electrical switches and the telephone lodgings.
I know it will eventually pass. I got used to it by know and accept it as part of my nature…it is a cycle, a necessity…my way of dealing and digesting what is going on in my life.

So che passerà.

Normal Misadventures in between Rome & Milan / Normali Peripezie fra Roma e Milano

Back home.

Survived heavy snow, wildcat striking crowds, heavily delayed flights, kidnapping in an aeroplane, fuming directors, rumbling area-managers, discouraging talks, noxious food and lazy arrogant taxi drivers.

Sono tornata a casa.

Sopravvissuta a copiose nevicate, gente in scioperi selvaggi, voli con ritardi impensabili, sequestro in aeroplano, direttori furiosi, capi area in perenne borbottio, chiacchierate demoralizzanti, cibo votato per l’avvelenamento altrui e pigri e arroganti tassisti.

A pulse-cadenced life / Una vita ritmata ad impulsi

I do not know why but this news struck me: 140 years ago the first traffic light (using a gas lantern) was devised and we spend roughly 5 years of our lifetime waiting for the traffic lights to change.
Have you ever thought how many weird things you do while you wait for that blessed red light to change?
The following are only a few examples (feel free to add more): change cd, put on the headset, look out for an unknown road on the street atlas, put your make up on, drink, search for apparently lost items in the car, observe the nearby drivers (a very peculiar species I dare say)…
But my all time favourite is to be able for those long seconds (or minutes depends on the traffic light) to look in my loved one’s eyes without putting my life at stack.
What can I say, 5 years of forced meditation, of crossroads, lost or found opportunities… A symbol of a pulse-cadenced life where brief snapshots taken at intersections eventually become bookmarks of our existence.

Silence of the Soul / Il Silenzio dell' Anima

I reached the shore as if taken by hand. My eyes filled with tears and my lungs grasping for air. All I could do is be there on that deserted sandy shore late at night.
All I could do is leave on the seaside a bundle filled with regrets and pain, poisoned and deadly words. I removed it from my grief-stricken heart and left it there under a midnight blue starry night where it delicately reflected the nearly full moon.
A excruciating act… but all of a sudden there you were Adamant and Ginger, a hand each on my shoulder… many others quickly joined in. Their presence made it known to me by filling me with an overwhelming sense of love and peace.
We stayed there and watched as the sea slowly enclosed the packet and bit by bit take it away….gradually towards the horizon.
And slowly to my breath stillness came to be, to my mind peace and to my soul….silence.

My Third Anniversary / Il mio Terzo Anniversario

These days happen to be my 3rd anniversary since somehow a light bulb got light in my brain and I sincerely admitted to myself that I do have a tendency to fall in love even with women.

This publicity which I found this morning in a journal seems somehow fitting to the occasion (my apologies to the gentlemen who are reading the post).

Ladies, you do not need a man to make you shiver with pleasure!

Today for work reasons I went to Minturno, a small village in the middle of nowhere exactly on the regional frontier between Lazio and Campania.

In the waiting room I was in the company of an elderly woman. You know the kind of elderly person that makes you feel cosy and chat with. Well we had to wait a bit so we eventually started talking.

Where are you coming from this morning? Most probably she asked me this question because at 9am I was already looking tired. From Rome I answered.

Oh so you had a long trip….

Well yes I woke up at 5am and just did a two and a half hour drive.

Anyway we continued talked for another few minutes until she exclaimed:

Oh you’ve got quite a lot of trouble in Rome due to all those foreigners living there!

Believe me I didn’t know what to say…thank god that in that instant the person I was waiting for called me in!

Luckly enough / Veramente fortunata

I was really enjoying this book, learning a lot about my modes of behaviour but life has decided otherwise.
Last Friday while I was swimming someone decided to steal my bag. I was left fortunately enough with my towel and shoes, able to go back home call my neighbour to give me the spare key. Went in home put my spectacles on ( I was till then moving around in a fogging environment) and a gown, then went back to the seaside to see if I could find my bag thrown over somewhere.
I eventually did find it. Two young lads have ran after the villain and found my bag back thrown near a big dustbin. I found everything inside, my house keys, my spectacles, my swimming gown, my sun tan lotion except for Lise Bourbeau’s book I wrote about in my last post!
Gosh, I never thought my blog had this effect on my readers!!!!!
Well it seems someone needed it more than I do. Wish you luck fellow and thank you Universe for bringing back home all my belongings (nearly).

Note to the Postman / Avviso al Postino

I have withstood for months my letters being minced by the postman’s stubbornness in trying to post letters which are bigger than the letterbox opening. Today it was my last day of tolerance because he is now posting letters at random i.e. posting my letters in my neighbours’ letterboxes.

So I decided to write a note. The first note I wrote under impulse. When my girlfriend read it she thought it was better to change slightly the wordings because it was, according to her, prone to attract obscene remarks.

Now the problem for me is to translate it in a way that renders the original humour. This is the first version with a spelling mistake that can’t be translated but which I wrote in brackets what was the Italian meaning.

“The postman is kindly asked to read correctly the surname (which I got wrong in Italian giving it the meaning of “with elves”) and insert in the right hole.
And please try not to defy physics by trying to put enormous letters in small slits.”

This is the final version.

“The postman is kindly asked to read correctly the surnames and insert them in the corresponding letterboxes.
And please do not try to defy daily the laws of physics by trying to insert enormous letters through small slits.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Secondo lei davo adito a commenti sconci.

This is a Heinz mayonnaise advertisement . I really liked it. Found it cute. But someone decided that it didn’t conform to public morality and so the ad wasn’t aired. If you want to see the ad please sign the petition. It is another way of letting know the world that we are here.

Love the Tuscolana Way / Amore in salsa Tuscolana

In a condominium on Via Tuscolana in Rome:

My dearest love, maybe without you I can have all the world….
But what shall I do with all the world…
If only with your smile…
I can have all the universe….
Always in my heart…
I Love you.

A never ending story / Una storia infinita

You might think I’m writing because I’ve done my exam. Not at all. Actually I did only half of it.
A series of unexpected events have caused my postponing the exam of a week with the kind permission of my teacher and fellow students.
The night between Friday and Saturday a ledge fell on a person in my condominium causing an obvious upheaval. Firemen and policemen came on the scene. Further bricks were put down to safety but in doing so they broke my gas pipes…..I leave the rest to your imagination
So here I am with no exam done, no hot water to take a shower or have some tea and obviously no cooking….Hopefully tomorrow everything will be settled down.

Touch for Health Exam / Esame di Touch for Health

I just wanted to explain why these days I’m posting less and I’m not leaving comments on other blogs, friends of mine.
I’m studying (and obviously at the same time working) Touch for Health. It is a first small step in the my studying kinesiology. This weekend, starting from today, I’ll be undergoing my final exam. I would like to do well since it is the first of many to come.
Another reason why I would like to do well is that my teacher is also my sort of life mentor and I don’t wont to fail her.
Lately she did something I really appreciated. She gave me one of her books to read. She is so jealous about her books (as much as I am). But what really struck my heart was the fact that with that book she sort of started in a subtlety way my let’s call it “spiritual” tuition.
And I feel so honoured about it…I wasn’t expecting it.

P.S. I would like to thank all those of you who patiently have been my guinea pig....you are always welcome for other sessions! This was only the beginning.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
