E’ strano come riusciamo a lasciarci prendere in giro così facilmente. Noi che ci reputiamo persone intelligenti, persone che hanno studiato per cui con un certo intelletto.

Mi affascina e nel frattempo mi disturba vedere come la realtà può essere trasformata a piacere dai mass media. Come le parole e i toni cambiano a secondo di come si vuole fare interpretare i fatti presentanti. Noi non siamo presentati con dei fatti cosi come sono, che poi sta noi a decidere il come giudicare, se vogliamo, l’evento.

I mass media ci confezionano dei pacchetti già pronti per suscitare emozioni pro o contro a seconda di quello che c’è bisogno di creare.

Se avete opportunità di rivedere le notizie all’inizio della scorsa settimana, che trattavano sulla protesta degli studenti, vi accorgerete che sono stati presentati come degli eroi che hanno saputo cantare fuori dal coro.

Ma ora quelli stessi universitari sono presentati come dei criminali che hanno impedito lo svolgimento della democrazia.

Come mai nessuno vede che tutta questa faccenda del papa e l’università La Sapienza è stato solo un mezzo per creare più ascolti non solo per il papa ma anche per la classe politica?

Il papa non andando alla Sapienza, per sua esplicita scelta, come ha espresso oggi alla piazza gremita di gente, universitari e politici, ha ottenuto un reportage dal mass media più ampio e più dettagliato di quanto semplicemente andando alla università . Un evento di un giorno è stato tramutato in una incombenza di stato.

Alla università avrebbe trovato chi lo applaudiva e persone che lo gufavano come in tutte le democrazie dove è rispettata la libertà di parola. E’ bello andare la dove si può ottenere solo consensi.

Ma questo non era l’intento del papa. L’intento del papa era di creare uno scontro di ideologie in un campo che lui conosce bene, l’ambito universitario.

Attraverso questo boato il papa ha raggiunto la classe politica italiana e loro sono subito saltati in barca per creare un evento politico che tutti aspettavano.

Cioè avere l’opportunità di mettere a tacere tutte le polemiche sorte per le nuove leggi che in teoria il governo Prodi è stato eletto e demandato a compiere – uno stato più laico…e cosi uscire da un empasse con eleganza e senza torto.

Ora nessuno politico azzarderebbe ad andare contro quello che il papa dice per quanto riguarda l’aborto, la procreazione assistita, le unioni civili, i matrimoni fra persone dello stesso sesso e molte altre sfaccettature della realtà quotidiana di uno stato in teoria laico .

Ora i politici hanno la scusa, che loro essendo dei buoni cristiani non vorranno mai alterare l’umore del papa visto che è stato offeso così tanto da un gruppo minoritario della società italiana.
Ma quando mai il grande teologo della chiesa scelto proprio da papa Wojtyla più di vent’anni fa, per dirigere la teologia e politica della chiesa verso una osservanza quasi medievale delle leggi e dogmi della chiesa, si fa impaurire da pochi studenti e politici volta bandiera?

Sinceramente non ho mai visto in Italia un gruppo così piccolo e esiguo come tutti dicono, essere così ascoltato e con un potere politico così enorme, quando tonnellate di firme sono state raccolte per leggi che prontamente lo stato ha ignorato.

Devo dire complimenti a tutti perché qui non si parla di libertà di parola, che non è mai stata negata a nessuno, ma come alterare le parole per negare la libertà di altri.

It is strange how we let ourselves be deceived and legs pulled when we think highly of ourselves, as persons who have studied and so endowed with a certain degree of acumen.

It fascinates me but at the same time worries me how reality can be transformed at pleasure by mass media. How words and inflections change depending on how events need to be interpreted. We have no clear presentation of events as such. Judgement is not left up to us to decide how and if to judge the event.

Mass media presents us with preconfigured reality, already tuned to arouse emotions pro and against, depending what the needs are.

If you have the opportunity to view again the Italian news early this week, as regards the protest done by university students against the pope, invited to the opening ceremony of the university, you will notice that these students where depicted as heroes who had the courage to sing solo.

But now those same students are presented as criminals who have prevented the normal running of democracy.

How on earth, does anyone not notice that this happening is only a means to create more audience not only for the pope but also to Italian politicians?

The pope has decided not to go to La Sapienza, out of his own free will, as he himself declared today in St. Peter’s square stuffed with students and politicians. So doing, he obtained a greater and more detailed reportage by the mass media than if he simply went to the university. A one day event has been transformed into a state affair.

At the university, he would have found people applauding his ideas, as well as people who disagree, as in a normal democratic country where people have the right to express their own opinion. It’s quite easy speaking in front of an audience that is only there to applaud.

But this was not the pope’s intent. His intent was to create an ideological contrast in an area he knows quite well, the university.

Through this pandemonium, the pope stirred the Italian politicians and they obviously saw in this pre-programmed incident, the opportunity that they’ve been waiting for so long.
That is an opportunity to stop all the hassle and debate on the new laws that in theory Prodi’s government has been elected and delegated to actuate – a more secular state….and so coming out of a political deadlock with elegance and without blemish.

Now, no politician would dare go against the pope’s will as regards abortion, assisted procreation, civil union, same-sex marriage and so many other everyday issues in a theoretically Italian lay country.

Now, the politicians have an excuse, that since they are good Christians, they will never want to irritate the pope, since he has been already so much offended by such a minority group of the Italian society.

But when on earth, did the great church theologian, chosen by pope Wojtyla, more than twenty years ago, to direct the church, towards a theology and politics of strict, nearly medieval observance of the church laws and dogmas, be frightened by such a small group of students and shallow politicians?

Sincerely I’ve never seen in Italy such a small group, as the media says, having such a huge political power, when tons of petitions have been signed for laws that the state has simply ignored.

May I congratulate all those who are involved in this affair. Here what has been challenged, is not the right to express one’s idea. It has never been denied to anyone. Here the lesson is, how to alter words and facts to deny other’s freedom.

L'Università La Sapienza è il Papa / La Sapienza University and the Pope

Qua tutti dicono la loro su questo evento e allora ho deciso anche io di dire la mia, visto che sono anche un ex-studente di questa università.

Parto dal punto che il rettore prima di invitare qualche personaggio religioso alla cerimonia di inaugurazione dell'anno accademico doveva chiedere il parere dei suoi colleghi e studenti.

Invitando un qualsiasi personaggio religioso a questo tipo di cerimonia implica in un modo abbastanza palese, il dare potere e gemellare scienza e religione.Sono due poli che secondo me devono essere tenuti separati, per vari motivi (come la storia ben insegna).

Se il rettore voleva dare, come ha detto lui, punti di riflessione che qualsiasi laico fa sulla vita, allora forse era meglio invitare diversi esponenti di diverse religioni, atei, agonstici e scienziati in una conferenza fatta ad hoc, non la cerimonia di inaugurazione dell'università.

Il diritto di parola così non è negata a nessuno ma è salvaguardata l'autonomia del sapere, dell'insegnamento e dell'accademia.

Alla fine però, è il Papa che ne è uscitò vincente, perchè ha scelto la via del martirio ed è quella che giova sempre ad una causa, ancor di più se quella causa fa vincere anime. Il Papa è un grande stratega e in questa situazione lo ha dimostrato scegliendo il sacrificio dell'incompreso.

E questo effetto si è visto subito nella classe politica, dove si sono subito schierati ovviamente il più possibile vicino al Papa. I sensi di colpa hanno colpito ancora e si perde di nuovo il confine fra lo stato e la chiesa.

Si parla di negazione del diritto di parola. Qua la parola non è stata mai negata. Il Papa ha detto sempre quello che gli pareva (ed è giusto che sia cosi) e lo dirà di nuovo anche in questa situazione perchè uscirà un comunicato stampa con il suo discorso.

Qua quello che è stato messo in discussione è l'innopportunità della presenza di qualsiasi capo religioso ad una funzione di una istituzione laica. E' come un tempo quando il re si faceva incoronare dal Papa....

Sono orgoliosa di questa università che ha avuto il coraggio di dire la sua e rispettare i confini fra accademia e religione. Qualche cosa che i politici non riescono proprio ad avere il coraggio di far rispettare, il confine fra stato e religione garantendo i diritti a tutti.

So to cut a long story short, the rector of the La Sapienza University invited the pope for the opening ceremony of the new academic year.

Anyone would understand that this is not a very well-chosen move. The students obviously reacted badly to the idea.

The pope at the end, decided not to attend the event, choosing the way to martyrdom...always an excellent way to enforce one's idea especially if the cause is winning over souls.

The politicians immediately took the pope's side declaring that the pope was denied his right to express his opinion.

The pope has always expressed his opinion (and so it should be) and even in this situation the pope will say what he wants. A press release tomorrow will be available with the entire speech he was going to give at the University.

What has been contested here is the coupling of religion with academia. Coupling religion, any religion, with the new academic year opening ceremony is like a pope crowing a king.

The rector sadly replied that he only wanted people to reflect secularly on life. Well if he wanted to do so it was more appropriate to invite various exponents of various religious identities, atheists, agnostics and scientists in a seminar created just for them.

This is yet another example of how in Italy the limits between state and religion is being trespassed with such ease that one wonders if Italy is heading towards another papal state.

I admire the students for their courage. A courage that their fellow politicians have long forgotten and failing daily to promote a state that gives rights to every single person whatever their belief is.
