Today I've decided to use my wings / Oggi ho deciso di usare le mie ali

When I was born I was given a present I rarely used. It was a pair of wings that I could strap on and enable me to fly.

Life’s eternal struggles made me forget what a beautiful gift I was given. Heaviness has made me forget the lightness of being.

I saw it there hanging from a nail near my spinning bicycle and weights bench. Years of dust tarnished the looks but today I decided it was time to use them.

Surprisingly enough the leather straps fitted snugly in place without any effort. They felt as if I had always worn them all through these years.

I thought I would not remember how to fly but as if by magic as I tightened the last silver engraved buckle, these small white wings moved and twitched, coming to life. They grew in size to adjust to my grown up stature.

Curious, I went in front of the mirror and saw these two enormous fluffy wings settling in and becoming part of me. They seemed half way in between the classical angels wings but with a seagulls span.

I wondered how on earth (or should I say how on the sky) I was going to fly?

I went on the balcony. Looked around not daring to look down least I got frightened. Rain was pouring down fast. Couldn’t have I chosen a better day? Will the rain wet the feathers and prevent me from flying? Birds do fly while raining. Why should I not?

Maybe I just should pay attention not to wet the underside part. That’s what someone told me as an explanation about how birds fly while it is raining when I was a child.

So I closed my eyes, tilted my head upwards. All of a sudden I felt something stretching on my back and a strange ascending thrust pulled my unexpected light body, off the ground.

I opened my eyes and there I was slowly gaining speed, rising towards the grey clouds. Rain droplets hit my face but it didn’t matter.

This incredible lightness was like an euphoric drug. The more it increased the more I wanted it. The more it became part of me.

I was now reaching the clouds. I felt I was being shrouded in a wet but cosy cloth. Noises dampened and colours drifted slowly from grey to vibrant white.

Until all of a sudden I felt a strange warmth reaching through and in no time I was blinded by the sun’s rays.

How beautiful it was being there. I titled horizontally and I sailed unbelievable smoothly on the bed of clouds. Now and then I dipped in the velvety sea to soar up again towards the sun. I was curious to feel the ever changing consistency of the clouds.

I relaxed. It seemed I had an innate automatic pilot. I closed my eyes, spread my arms, stretched my wings and tilted my head towards the sky.

I let myself being filled with this golden nurturing light. I let myself relax and let be.

I knew that I couldn’t stay there for ever. That my place was also on earth. But I also knew now that this was always part of me and whenever I wanted to, when heaviness dulls my senses I can also come back here. Have my fill, relax and look at my life from up here.

It’s amazing how life’s perspective changes!

Mi domandavo, come diamine avrei fatto a volare?
