Women's Right to self-detemination / Il diritto delle donne per l' autodeterminazione

For ages women were used only as a procreation vessel with no other rights but to give birth and take care of children, precluding them from any other activity, career or responsibility.
In such situation women had no rights pertaining to free human beings. In this case, freedom to manage her own body, decide how, when and if to conceive and give birth.
In today’s battle to defend the right to have a possibility to choose, we often forget who makes it possible for a foetus to be born. In this conflict, importance is focused on the foetus and not on the woman who made everything possible.
I think that no woman eventually decides to perform an abortion light heartedly. There are a million painful reasons why an abortion is done, reasons which we can’t even remotely imagine if we haven’t lived through this dramatic situation.
Its really appalling to hear men who in theory are cultured representatives of their species, decide on others’ life, especially on women’s body which becomes again for the umpteenth time only a birthing vessel.
It angers me the fact that medical staff should be obliged to reanimate a foetus without its mother’s consent. Thus going against directives given by all international health authorities not to reanimate foetus under 23 weeks of gestation for obvious reasons, not only of the eventual survival of the foetus but also for the life quality that the foetus is being offered.
We quickly forget how many families are struck by immeasurable pain, watching grow their not self-sufficient children in a society where specific specialised care is not assured. We wrestle to give life when the quality of the life given is not guaranteed.
Life, how it is managed, taken care of and the treatments one decides to undergo (in this case abortion or the morning-after pill) should be a right given to all. Choice should be individually taken. In this case every single woman will decide according to her own believes and priorities.
The right to conscientious objection by various health professionals (a profession I proudly belong to), can’t be used to forcedly implement a certain code of ethics of a particular group on an individual. The right to conscientiously object has to be balanced by the right to decide on self-determination.
It’s outrageous that in Italy thorough sexual education without taboo and prejudices is still an unreachable goal. Only through sexual education and the freedom to express one’s own sexuality with profound awareness that in the future we shall have a society that will respect every single individual for who he/she is than for what he/she will eventually give to the society.
